We’re protecting fungi
Fungi are everywhere, floating in the air we breathe, living on our skin, and hiding under every step we take. They form vast underground networks that store and transport carbon, water, and nutrients, connecting trees, plants, and all forms of life. Scientists now understand that fungi are the connective tissue that hold ecosystems together, Without them, there would be no healthy forests, nothing would break down, and Earth would be buried in endless layers of dead leaves, trees, and branches! And yet, fungi are hugely overlooked in nature protection.
The mission
In June 1992, world leaders gathered in Rio De Janeiro, and signed the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, a historic agreement to protect the world’s flora and fauna. But something vital was missing: funga. While plants and animals earned protection under international law, fungi were left out and forgotten. Thankfully, one organization is working to change that.

The Fungi Foundation is on a mission to make sure fungi are not just noticed, but protected. And in 2026, a rare window opens to make that happen: the Biodiversity COP in Armenia, where 196 countries will shape the future of life on Earth. Our goal? Get enough countries to back The Fungal Conservation Pledge and push the UN to include fungi in its global nature protection agreements. With the support of the Planet Wild community and Ecosia, we’re supporting the Fungi Foundation’s global campaign to bring politicians on board and protect fungi. If successful, this could unlock a new approach to nature protection and protect entire ecosystems for good.

Giuliana Furci is a Chilean field mycologist who has been working to protect fungi since 1999. As the founder and CEO of the Fungi Foundation—the world’s first NGO dedicated to fungi—she has transformed how fungi are perceived and protected globally. Her work led to fungi being formally included in Chilean environmental laws. Under her leadership, the Fungi Foundation has helped assess the conservation status of over 80 species. Giuliana is also a global advocate for mycological inclusion through the Fauna, Flora, Funga (FFF) movement.
