We’re protecting Europe’s last ancient forests
Europe was once a continent of trees. Up to 80% of its land was covered in primary forest. But today, less than 1% of that wilderness is left, with much of it hidden away in the mountains of Romania. These old-growth forests are a relic, having survived at least the last ice age and massive climatic shifts. But this last remnant of Europe’s wilderness is under attack. Corruption, illegal clear-cutting, and timber mafias are hacking away at the forests. These once majestic trees are reduced to wood for construction sites and furniture that sits in nearly every household.
The mission
Activists who speak up to defend these ancient forests face threats, stalking, and attacks. Gabriel Paun, founder of Agent Green, has survived it all. For over a decade, he’s risked everything to expose the truth and save what’s left of Europe’s last wilderness. Agent Green goes undercover to investigate and expose exactly who is stealing these forests. So far, they’ve saved almost 60,000 hectares of ancient forest that would otherwise be gone forever. Their work is so vital that the United Nations even named Gabriel a Champion of the Earth.

To continue the fight, Gabriel needs every possible tool in his arsenal. That’s where the BioT comes in. The BioT is a chainsaw detector, using a 360-degree microphone connected to a satellite system and specifically designed software to target the loggers’ biggest weakness: the loud noise. It can detect a chainsaw within a one-kilometer radius. It can also listen to the forest. That means, with an AI chip, it can listen to bird calls and other natural sounds, identify which species are present, and use that information to create a biodiversity map of the ecosystem. With the help of the Planet Wild community, we’re funding 10 BioT devices, one year of ranger patrols, and two years of data collection and analysis to protect 300 hectares of Europe’s last ancient forests.

Our Partner
Gabriel Paun has been fighting for nature and animals since 2011, working with organizations such as Greenpeace, Four Paws and Animals International. He then founded Agent Green, an organization dedicated to protecting thousands of hectares of forest and the biodiversity they support. Despite having faced violent attacks, poisoning attempts, and even periods in hiding, he has never stopped fighting for nature. For his bravery and impact, the UN named him a 2024 Champion of the Earth, its highest environmental honor.
