We’re buying a cloud forest
In the cloud forests of Medellín, Colombia—named after the thick clouds that cover the peaks—three different worlds collide. It’s a place where the Andes mountains meet the vast Caribbean plains and the wild Chocó-Darién rainforest. Flora, fauna and funga from all three ecosystems mix together, resulting in an exceptionally high concentration of unique species. Five different species of wild cats rule the terrain and ancient trees that evolved alongside dinosaurs still stand. Unfortunately, this unique ecosystem is being cleared for cow pasture, a practice that came over in colonial times and is inefficient on these steep slopes. To help stop this, we have partnered with Fundación Magnolios who are building a nature reserve from scratch using a three-step plan.
The mission
The first step is buying the land. Since 2016, Magnolios has grown the reserve to 700 hectares, ensuring this soil will never be a cow pasture again. Second, they let nature take the lead. Because the area is so moist and lush, nature regenerates faster here than almost anywhere else on Earth. Finally, step three is active conservation. For the rarest species, like the 100-million-year-old Magnolia trees that give the foundation its name, the team collects seeds to give them a fighting chance.

To help them grow the reserve, the Planet Wild community bought a new piece of forest. Once again, we teamed up with Ecosia and purchased a total of 53 hectares of land. This land is now permanently protected and will be allowed to return to its natural state. Along with the land, we are funding 2.5 years of salaries for two rangers and providing specialized gear and training. This support helps the team explore and protect the deep forest, from its rare, ancient magnolias to the five elusive cat species that call it home.
