We’re using tech to build a forest that lasts
Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, supporting tens of millions of people. Right next to it, up on the hills sits Old Bonjoge, a community surrounded by lush nature. Unfortunately, this natural beauty is disappearing. For years, locals have noticed how the rocks on the hillside seem to be “growing”. What sounds like a strange natural phenomenon is actually caused by deforestation. Without trees stabilizing the ground, the soil literally washes away during storms, exposing more and more rocks. This leads to flash floods which threaten lives, destroy infrastructure and carry farm chemicals into Lake Victoria.
The mission
While planting trees seems like an easy fix, reforestation isn’t as straightforward it sounds. Many global projects fail because they focus on the number of trees planted rather than how many actually survive. This leaves behind "phantom forests" which exist on paper but have no living trees. We’re not just planting and hoping for the best.

We’re teaming up with veritree and Earthlungs and using cutting-edge tech to make sure our forest actually thrives. We use LiDAR drones with a laser-based scanning system to map the land and build a digital terrain model. This allows us to find the best place to start. Once our trees are planted, they’re equipped with a dendrometer which measures the tree health and growth. In addition, we’re using bioacoustic sensors to “listen” to the forest and detect species, as well as trail cameras to capture the comeback of wildlife. With the support of our community, we’re funding the planting of 80,000 trees and three full years of this rigorous monitoring. By combining local expertise with this cutting-edge tech, we’re making sure that the forest, the local communities, and Lake Victoria can thrive permanently.
